You may or may not have noticed that very few, if any, political leaflets championing the transformative capabilities of prospective district councillors while shining a spotlight on the supposed shortcomings of either the incumbent, their competitors and their respective parties have made their way through your letterbox and into your home this year.
This might feel especially odd given that everyone seems to be talking about this year’s local elections – on TV, online, on podcasts, in print – which, we are led to believe, judging by the way the tone and substance of the national conversation, the most consequential local elections since, well, the last set of supposedly momentous elections. That was, of course, in 2024, which was pitched as a litmus test for what everyone thought would be, at the latest, a winter general election. A very wet Rishi Sunak proved otherwise.
But the reason it’s a little quieter in the Bradford district is that no local elections are taking place this year. In our authority, we elect councillors in thirds every three years, which results in what is sometimes referred to as a fallow fourth year. This isn’t unique to us, but it does mean a year of sitting on the sidelines. When we do get to the polling booths in 2026, who we vote for and why might be shaped by a totally different political backdrop. A lot can happen in a year.
This time around, in 2025, the story is a triple whammy of sorts. It’s the first test for the new government, the first test for the new opposition leader and the first test for the new multi-party era that aims to disrupt the longstanding traditional political duopoly of Labour and the Conservatives. And while we may not be taking part this time around, the overall and regional outcomes will have their reverberations.
Against this backdrop, in addition to observing trends, listening attentively to what voters are saying and absorbing plenty of brilliant analysis and commentary, we’ve also been busy looking back at how things have unfolded in our neck of the woods. A significant portion of that research will now be directed towards stories for next year, but we thought it worthwhile to publish some of the data we gathered, specifically the results for each ward since 2019. We hope you find it useful. We did.
One final thing. We just turned one. To celebrate, we’re knocking 65% off the usual price for The Ilkley Journal. It works out at around just £2 per month – a huge steal. Your support will directly help fund our journalism and make a huge difference to our operations. Thank you.
