Opposition to proposed increased parking charges and extended paid hours in Ilkley
A letter from Cllr Andrew Judson to Cllr Alex Ross-Shaw (cc: Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe)
Dear councillor Alex Ross-Shaw,
I am writing to formally express my strong opposition to the proposed increase in parking charges in Ilkley, particularly the removal of one-hour free parking and the extension of paid parking hours into the evening.
These changes will have a profoundly negative impact on both the town’s nightlife and its local businesses. By removing the free short-stay option, casual visitors are being deterred from dropping into shops, cafes, and restaurants –especially during quieter hours when footfall is already low.
The result would be a clear disincentive for spontaneous shopping and social visits, which are vital for the economic health of a town like Ilkley.
The extension of paid parking into evening hours will be especially harmful to the local hospitality industry. Ilkley has worked hard to build a vibrant evening economy, with restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues that contribute to the town’s character and appeal.
Increased parking costs in the evening will only discourage visitors, shift gatherings to other towns with more reasonable policies and ultimately risk the viability of these establishments.
These proposed changes do not reflect the needs or preferences of local residents or businesses, many of whom have already voiced serious concerns. The decision appears counterintuitive at a time when high streets across the UK are under pressure and communities are trying to recover from the economic challenges of recent years.
I urge Bradford Council to reconsider this policy and to keep the one-hour free parking period, as well as restore more community-friendly parking hours. Supporting access to local shops, services, and nightlife should be a priority for any council seeking to promote economic growth and community wellbeing.
Thank you for considering my views. I hope you will act in the best interests of Ilkley’s residents, businesses and visitors who will be affected by these proposed changes.
Yours faithfully,
Councillor Andrew Judson
(Keighley Town Council: Fell Lane and Westburn)
